German Physiks loudspeakers – how do they do it?

The heart of all German Physiks loudspeakers is our revolutionary DDD driver. This is an omnidirectional driver with an exceptionally wide frequency range - typically 200Hz to 24kHz. This is almost the entire audio range. This wide frequency range eliminates the need for the crossover point in the midrange that conventional loudspeakers must have and therefore eliminates the problems that this can cause. This is especially important since human hearing is most sensitive in the midrange.

The very wide frequency range also provides exceptional coherence compared to loudspeakers where this range is covered by several different types of drivers, which are located in different physical positions on the loudspeaker’s cabinet. 


Another key property of the DDD driver is that it is phase linear. This means that it preserves the phase relationships of the frequencies within its operating range. Music is a complex signal that can be broken down into a wide range of sine wave signals with specific frequencies and specific amplitudes, and very importantly, specific phase relationships between these frequencies. This mix is continuously varying. If an audio component does not accurately preserve these phase relationships, then its output will not be a faithful copy of its input.

Because the DDD driver is phase linear, its tonal accuracy and transient response are both exceptionally good. As music is a series of transients, a loudspeaker’s transient response is especially important.
