November 2021 | Newsletter No. 30

Two more great reviews

Welcome to the November 2021 German Physiks newsletter.

This month we are sharing reviews of our HRS-130 loudspeakers and our Emperor integrated amplifier. These were both done by a UK reviewer called Terry Ellis and published on his Pursuit of Perfect System YouTube channel. These are the first video reviews of our products and they have been educational for several reasons.

Firstly, for how much information a well produced and photographed video review can convey. While video reviews are not new, the ready availability of high quality cameras means that someone with the appropriate skills, can now produce reviews of a very high standard.

Secondly, how engaging a review presented by an enthusiastic presenter can be. This can clearly act as an incentive for viewers to want to see more of their content.

Thirdly, for the large amount of interest these two reviews have produced. In both cases, there was a large and sustained increase in our web site traffic related to these reviews and even some direct enquiries via our web site. Interestingly these enquiries came from outside the UK, which shows the reach of such reviews.

Anyway, on to the reviews.

“Very enjoyable, impressive, addictive”

Terry Ellis, Pursuit of Perfect System

“Very enjoyable, impressive, addictive speaker to listen to”, was how Terry Ellis summed up his video review of our HRS-130 loudspeakers. This was a carefully researched and thoughtful review, which highlighted the key features of this loudspeaker. In 15 minutes Terry packed in a lot of information. Here are some of the points he made.

On the DDD driver
“The cohesion of sound from the DDD driver works wonders for treble, mid-range and vocal delivery.”

On the treble performance
“I loved the treble from the HRS-130.” … “The treble was the perfect blend of precise, present clear and sweet.  Cymbals sounded like cymbals.  Not splashy.”

On the bass performance
“I cannot fault the quality and bass control, especially with deeper notes.” …  “Listening to a drum solo from a live album I use to test speakers’ bass, I was pretty stunned actually by the speed and clarity of the double kick-drum.”

On vocals
“Vocals were just as impressive …”.  “Clean, clear and precise, but with a fair amount of sweetness that I really enjoyed.”  … “Female vocals sounded particularly fantastic”.

On sound staging
“Convincingly three-dimensional sound stage.” … “I can only think of maybe a handful of speakers that I have heard before that have created a sound stage like this and they have generally cost a hell of lot more money.”

Clearly impressed with the HRS-130’s sound staging, Terry concluded:
“If you are into sound stage.  If it is really important to you, then you really owe it to yourself to listen to these loudspeakers.  They do so many things right.  I highly recommend them to everybody actually.  These are speakers you should definitely listen to.”

This a very well produced review, so please click the button below to see the video.

“The perfect integrated amplifier?”

German Physiks Emperor integrated amplifier
Terry Ellis, Pursuit of Perfect System

“I genuinely think that the Emperor integrated could be the perfect integrated amplifier”, is how Terry Ellis started his video review of the German Physiks Emperor integrated amplifier on his Pursuit of Perfect System YouTube channel.  This is a very bold statement, but Terry backed this up by saying:

“I have enjoyed a wide and the deepest sound stage I have ever had in my room …”

“Vocals I must say have been particularly impressive from the Emperor amplifier and that’s because it’s been delivering, I think the perfect balance of smoothness, but with detail and vividness, but with delicacy and the all-important tonality.”

“And I have enjoyed bass with the most amount of control from any amplifier I have reviewed to date. The level of control over the bass from the amplifier is insane.”

“… I have been sucked into the music and ended up listening way beyond when I planned to every single time.”

To show that the Emperor would excel with loudspeakers other than those from German Physiks, in addition to using our HRS-130, he listened with the Marten Audio Parker Duo Diamond and TAD Compact Evolution One loudspeakers.

This is a very informative and interesting review and well worth a look.

Here are a few screen grabs from the video.

A German Physiks staff member struggles to smoothly pull back the 17kg (37lbs) top cover, only for it clumsily drop off the back of the unit on to the floor.

The size and position of the openings in the “cooling plate” that covers the top of the amplifier were chosen to regulate the flow of air through the unit and ensure an even temperature throughout. This is so that the two halves of the balanced circuit are operating at as near as possible the same temperature and thus are maintaining their balance as closely as possible. This is important to optimise the noise performance.

With the cooling plate removed you can see the left and right power amplifier modules. The preamplifier and control circuitry sits under these, together with a 2,500VA power transformer that drives the power amplifier. This and the very solid chassis is why the amplifier weighs 60kg (132lbs).

The rear panel showing the amplifier’s six inputs, four pairs of outputs and the direct inputs to the power section. The latter are enabled by pressing the red button in the centre of the panel and are used when the amplifier is used with the Emperor DSP-X digital crossover in an active system.

In the pipeline

  • An online review of the Emperor integrated amplifier.

  • A comparison of our DDD driver with the driver that inspired its design, the Walsh driver in the classic Ohm F loudspeaker.

Until next time …
